COACHELLA VALLEY INVITATIONAL

The Coachella Valley Invitational recently hosted its 4th annual tournament in Indio, California, featuring some of Major League Soccer's most iconic clubs. This year’s event brought together Chicago Fire, San Jose Earthquakes, MLS champions LA Galaxy, Minnesota United FC, New York Red Bulls, Real Salt Lake, Portland Timbers, San Diego FC, St. Louis City, and New York City FC. The teams played 90-minute matches, providing a preview of their preparation as they gear up for the 2025-2026 MLS season. Clubs not only showcased their full rosters but also introduced some of their newest signings, such as Portland Timbers' record acquisition David Da Costa from FC Lens, and San Jose Earthquakes' new striking duo, Chicho Arango and former MLS MVP Josef Martinez. With the new season just around the corner, the tournament gave fans a glimpse of what to expect from North America’s top-tier soccer teams.

The action kicked off early at 10 AM with Chicago Fire facing off against Bruce Arena’s San Jose Earthquakes. Chicago Fire, led by newly appointed head coach Gregg Berhalter, wasted no time asserting their dominance. Jonathan Bamba, the team’s designated player, opened the scoring in the 7th minute with a penalty, setting the tone for a commanding 5-1 victory. Zinckernagel was a standout, contributing an assist on Gutiérrez's goal and winning two penalties. Fans were eager to see San Jose’s new striker duo, Chicho Arango and Josef Martinez, in action, but despite Arango’s goal in the second half, the Earthquakes’ offense couldn’t overcome the deficit. While Bruce Arena’s side has work to do, their talent pool suggests they will quickly find their rhythm and be competitive in the upcoming season.

The next match featured the current MLS champions, LA Galaxy, taking on Minnesota United. With the home crowd behind them, LA Galaxy put on a clinical performance, securing a 2-1 win. Tucker Lepley was the hero, scoring both goals for Galaxy and earning man of the match honors. Minnesota United showed promise, getting into goal-scoring positions but lacking the finishing touch. Nonetheless, they proved they’re a team to watch in the coming season. Despite losing key player Dejan Joveljić, LA Galaxy displayed their depth and championship pedigree, showing they’re ready to defend their title.

The thrilling action continued with a 6-goal showdown between the New York Red Bulls and Real Salt Lake. After trailing 1-0, New York responded with three unanswered goals, including a penalty from European star Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting. However, Real Salt Lake wasn’t done, and Julian Hall’s brace helped them fight back to secure a 3-3 draw. Real Salt Lake’s squad, with players from 10 different nationalities, showed resilience and cohesion, promising exciting things for the season ahead.

Next up, fans were treated to the debut match of MLS's newest club, San Diego FC, facing off against Portland Timbers. The game’s intensity was amplified by the presence of Mexican superstar Chucky Lozano, who brought a wave of Mexican fans in support. While Lozano didn’t start, his substitution in the second half sparked excitement. San Diego showed promise with impressive ball movement, but Portland’s experience and chemistry ultimately secured a 3-0 victory. The Timbers, in the midst of a new era following the departure of former star Evander, showcased their ability to adapt, while San Diego, despite the loss, demonstrated that Lozano’s leadership could elevate the team’s performance.

The day wrapped up with St. Louis City securing a 2-1 win over New York City FC. Forward Simon Becher stole the show with a brace, proving he’s ready to make a mark in the upcoming season. Despite the loss, NYCFC showcased their commitment to youth development, giving opportunities to young talents like midfielder Collin McCamy and defender Max Murray. As they prepare to face Inter Miami FC and Messi in their opening match, NYCFC will look to build on their promising foundation.

Unlike most leagues, MLS teams face unique challenges when it comes to preseason preparation, but the Coachella Valley Invitational provides a valuable opportunity for clubs to refine their skills and engage with fans. The tournament also gave supporters a chance to interact with players and coaches, creating lasting memories. With the 2025-2026 MLS season set to kick off soon, the tournament’s action has set the stage for an exciting year ahead.
